What is New Beginnings?

New Beginnings is a weekend retreat for middle school youth in grades 6-8. It focuses on the 2 greatest commandments: loving God with all of our heart, mind, and strength, and loving our neighbors as ourselves.

This fast-paced weekend, is run by a team of youth and youth leaders, and consists of a series of talks, skits, videos, games, music and worship. Some of the topics covered include:

  • Who Am I
  • Friends
  • Peer Influence
  • Changes
  • Family
  • God's Love
  • Who is Jesus?
  • The Church and Me
  • Prayer
  • Sharing Gifts

The weekend starts at 7:00 pm on Friday night and  finishes at 3:00 pm on Sunday.

Who can attend a New Beginnings Weekend?

New Beginnings is designed for middle school youth who are currently in grades 6, 7, or 8. Participants do not have to be Episcopalian, but you must be recommended by the parish priest, pastor, or youth minister from the church you attend and have a sponsor who will also be present at the event. Youth who are not members of a church should contact the youth minister or priest of the local Episcopal congregation for sponsorship.

Every church sending youth to a New Beginnings weekend must send an adult sponsor from that church, and they must be present during the entire weekend. For every three youth registered from a single congregation there must be one adult sponsor. For more information about being a New Beginnings sponsor, see the link below.

Who staffs a New Beginnings Weekend?

The New Beginnings weekend is run by high school students (grades 10-12) and both young adult and adult team members. Essential to this ministry is the idea that youth leadership models a Christian community with love and acceptance of every member. Leadership roles include Tribe Leaders, speakers, and a Prayer, Care and Share (PSC) Team. The Weekend Advisors are adults who coordinate all the activities during the weekend, and an Episcopal priest acts as a spiritual director. Sponsors are responsible for transporting their participants, supervising their youth during curfew times, and serve as support to the team during the entire weekend.

How much does it cost?

The cost for the event is $100 per person. Meals, accommodations, materials, and a t-shirt are included. Financial assistance is available. See the registration form for details. Please make checks payable to the Episcopal Diocese of Nevada.
