Virginia
City, once called "the richest place on earth" is
the largest federally designated Historical District in America.
St. Paul's
Episcopal Church has been a part of the fabric of this community
since 1876.
The first truly industrial city
in the West began in 1859 when gold was discovered in Six-Mile
Canyon.
Virginia City once had a population
of 30,000 and C Street, the main business street, is lined with 1860's
and 1870's buildings.
The Virginia and Truckee Railroad
once ran from Virginia City to Reno and Carson City. President Abraham
Lincoln made Nevada a state on October 31, 1864, even though the territory
did not have sufficient population to constitutionally authorize statehood.
The mostly restored area now has a population of about 6,000.
