GENERAL CONVENTION 2003

PRAYER BOOK LITURGIES AND MUSIC

THE FOLLOWING ACTIONS WERE APPROVED BY THE CONVENTION:

Enriching Our Worship authorized for another triennium. Additions include multicultural resources and ethnic festivals, Journey to Adulthood rites. New liturgies for beginning a congregation, commissioning a church planter, etc. Publish in English, Spanish, and French.

Directed the Standing Commission to develop revised supplemental Ordination liturgies that support the ministry of all the baptized in those liturgies (C025).

Invited abortion recovery programs and the National Organization of Episcopalians for Life (NOEL) to participate in developing a liturgy for a healing/memorial service ministering to those suffering from post-abortion stress (D047).

The bishops approved the adoption of the Revised Common Lectionary (A103) for liturgical use in place of the lectionary printed in the Book of Common Prayer. However, the House of Deputies did not concur so the trial use of the RCL contiues. While some bishops argued against the measure, citing costs and concerns about usage, others said it would conform with many of the available teaching and preaching resources. The RCL also includes more of the Biblical stories about women. The Revised Common Lectionary is used by several other denominations, including the Evangelical Lutheran Church (ELCA). The adopted legislation permits but does not require its use.

Saints added to the calendar on a trial basis: Janani Luwum, Archbishop of Uganda and Martyr; William Temple, Archbishop of Canterbury; Clive Staples Lewis, Apologist and Spiritual Writer; Philander Chase, Bishop of Ohio, and of Illinois; Florence Li Tim Oi, First Woman Priest of the Anglican Communion.
Commend for study and possible inclusion in the calendar in 2006: Tikhon, Russian Orthodox Bishop of Alaska and North America; and John Roberts, Missionary to Wind River Reservation and western Wyoming.

Standing Commission to develop additions to supplemental liturgies for "Burial of a Child"

From the list of approved translations of Bible to be read in public worship, remove Dios Habla Hoy and add "other translations authorized by the diocesan bishop of those approved versions published in any other language."
