Diocese of Mt. Kenya South, Kiambu -Mothers' Union Annual Rally
on Saturday 8 March. We arrived 45 minutes late because of transportation
difficulties, and found that the program had already begun. It went on
for nearly another four hours, with several hundred people sitting in
long rows under tents on the lawn of the cathedral. I gave an address,
we heard reports of all the Mothers' Union activities around the Diocese,
and we heard a dynamic sermon from a lay evangelist from the Rift Valley.
She was a powerhouse! After the formal program we had a quick tour of
the cathedral grounds and a meal in the "hall" - a massive indoor
space nearly the size of the cathedral.
Mothers' Union is a force to be reckoned with in Kenya, leading numerous
development projects as well as supporting individual women in their own
spiritual lives and ministries. It was begun in the late 1800s by a woman
from England. The women wear their blue and white uniforms and present
a remarkable vision of spiritual solidarity.
